ARC REVIEW: Shine by Jessica Jung

Hey everyone!

I’m so grateful to Pansing and Glasstown Entertainment for sending me an ARC of Shine! 😍 This book will be available soon in all good bookstores on the 29th of September, 2020!

Author: Jessica Jung
Release Date: September 29,2020
Pages: 352
Blurb:
What would you give for a chance to live your dreams?

For seventeen-year-old Korean American Rachel Kim, the answer is almost everything. Six years ago, she was recruited by DB Entertainment—one of Seoul’s largest K-pop labels, known for churning out some of the world’s most popular stars. The rules are simple: Train 24/7. Be perfect. Don’t date. Easy right?

Not so much. As the dark scandals of an industry bent on controlling and commodifying beautiful girls begin to bubble up, Rachel wonders if she’s strong enough to be a winner, or if she’ll end up crushed… Especially when she begins to develop feelings for K-pop star and DB golden boy Jason Lee. It’s not just that he’s charming, sexy, and ridiculously talented. He’s also the first person who really understands how badly she wants her star to rise.

Get ready as Jessica Jung, K-pop legend and former lead singer of Korea’s most famous girl group, Girls Generation, takes us inside the luxe, hyper-color world of K-pop, where the stakes are high, but for one girl, the cost of success—and love—might be even higher. It’s time for the world to see: this is what it takes to SHINE

My thoughts on this book:

I was over the moon when I received this book 😍 I recently jumped on the KPOP bandwagon (although I’m not as obsessed yet…I feel like a full on obsession is coming soon 😂) ANYWAY, I was excited to start reading this and let me tell you I finished this book in one sitting so it was a lot of information to take in 😂 so excuse me if this review is all over the place 🙈

Rachel Kim aspires to be the next KPOP superstar, she’s gone through gruesome training for 6 long years and soon hopes to make her debut. However there are so many challenges that she doesn’t expect to be thrown in her way.

While reading this book, I felt like I was peeking through a peephole into the KPOP world. It’s so shocking to see how different the front the KPOP world puts out and what actually happens behind the scenes. I don’t mean to sound cheesy while saying this but this was literally an exploration into the dark side of KPOP. I had no idea KPOP stars went through so much like a trainee camp and at such a young age as well. I knew that KPOP stars undergo a lot of training but I just couldn’t even fathom HOW MUCH. It really goes to show how much happens behind the scenes that we have absolutely no idea about.

This book addressed a really important topic which is sexism within the entertainment industry. It was blatantly clear in the book (and in real life 👀👀) that the males have it better and receive way less negativity and scrunity compared to the females. There are several instances in the book where Rachel and the other aspiring ladies questioning why they didn’t get asked the same interesting interview questions as their male friends or receive as much negativity and hate.

There’s SO MUCH going on behind the scenes that the fans don’t know about and this book really showcased that well. It connected me to the main character emotionally and I felt as if I was seeing the book play out through the eyes of the main character.

The plot to me was quite confusing as I found it all over the place and there wasn’t any shocking plot twists, it was more of a steadily paced book. It made up with the amazing and interesting characters though 😍 there are so many precious moments in this book where I kept rereading because the characters were just so adorable. I would say this was a more character driven book for me.

When I got to the ending I was so shocked that there wasn’t much closure so I kind of panicked until I found out there’s going to be a book two which by the way I am now so anxious for!! 😍😭

I rated it a 4/5 🌟!

Would I recommend this book?

Yes! I definitely recommend you to check it out! 😍 It gives a great insight into KPOP, talks about important topics, has lovable characters and altogether a pretty amazing book! ✨

Wishing all of you have amazing day! ✨

Until the next blog post,
– the Joyful Reader❤️
