BOOK REVIEW: Foul Lady Fortune by Chloe Gong

Hi friends! I’m so so excited to be sharing my thoughts for FOUL LADY FORTUNE by Chloe Gong! This book has been one of my most anticipated reads because the Violent Delights duology is just PERFECTION so trust me when I say I have high hopes for this book!

Thank you so much to Pansing for sending me a copy of this STUNNING book! You can now get yourself a copy of Foul Lady Fortune in all good bookstores!

Author: Chloe Gong
Blurb: The first book in a captivating new duology following an ill-matched pair of spies posing as a married couple to investigate a series of brutal murders in 1930s Shanghai.

It’s 1931 in Shanghai, and the stage is set for a new decade of intrigue.

Four years ago, Rosalind Lang was brought back from the brink of death, but the strange experiment that saved her also stopped her from sleeping and aging—and allows her to heal from any wound. In short, Rosalind cannot die. Now, desperate for redemption from her traitorous past, she uses her abilities as an assassin for her country.

Code name: Fortune.

But when the Japanese Imperial Army begins its invasion march, Rosalind’s mission pivots. A series of murders is causing unrest in Shanghai, and the Japanese are under suspicion. Rosalind’s new orders are to infiltrate foreign society and identify the culprits behind the terror plot before more of her people are killed.

To reduce suspicion, however, she must pose as the wife of another Nationalist spy, Orion Hong, and though Rosalind finds Orion’s cavalier attitude and playboy demeanor infuriating, she is willing to work with him for the greater good. But Orion has an agenda of his own, and Rosalind has secrets that she wants to keep buried. As they both attempt to unravel the conspiracy, the two spies soon find that there are deeper and more horrifying layers to this mystery than they ever imagined.

My thoughts:
I AM MIND BLOWN!! This book literally made me scream, cry, and laugh and also swoon at the same time like HELP

Omg these CHARACTERS! Orion has MY WHOLE HEART 😭😭 I adored his character so so much, his wittiness and sunshine personality was PERFECT. For Rosalind, I wasn’t the biggest fan of her in These Violent Delights but the character arc for her was done SPLENDIDLY in this book 😍 I found myself rooting for her and finally understanding her side of the story! Orion and Rosalind together seriously made my life, like the banter, the chemistry, and the whole fake marriage trope was SO GOOD. They had me swooning and crying 😭😭 their names for each other were so precious (beloved, darling, QIN AI DE) WHAHDHAHDHSHHSHS

The writing is spectacular as always! Chloe Gong has such a beautiful writing style so it was a complete immersive experience reading Foul Lady Fortune.

The plot was definitely something. Even though it felt familiar and was actually quite similar to These Violent Delights with the chasing and pondering about who was behind everything, it was done in a way where it didn’t feel repetitive and there was something new to the story. There were some plot twists that I slowly figured out along the way and a few that literally came out of nowhere and slammed into me. Like I’m still reeling from a few of them and I’m eagerly anticipating the next book 🥺

I will have to say though this book did feel a bit more all over the place to me and perhaps that was the intention but I feel like I couldn’t grasp the concept of the story well enough which took me some time to get through. Other than that, this was a near-perfect book for me. I am so obsessed with the story and I’m definitely looking forward to rereading it!

My Rating: 4/5
